Resources for Air Quality Monitoring — Kaiterra

Kaiterra Launches Sensedge Go, the Groundbreaking Wireless, Battery-Powered Air Quality Monitor

Kaiterra is thrilled to announce the launch of our first-ever wireless, battery-powered indoor air quality monitor: the Sensedge Go. This monitor is redefining the industry standard in air quality monitoring with a groundbreaking sensor design that was born from listening and responding to what the market has been asking for.

The Sensedge Go was built to solve today’s challenges while also maintaining flexibility to meet evolving demands, regulations, and building certification requirements. In other words, the Sensedge Go is future-proof, and it exists for one purpose: to make it easier for you to get the air quality data you need to create healthier spaces.

During our live launch event, we gathered together with industry experts, partners, consultants, customers, and the global Kaiterra team to unveil the technology and innovation behind the Sensedge Go.

What Sets the Sensedge Go Apart From Other Air Quality Monitors?

1. Simple and lightning-fast installation

As a 100% battery-powered monitor, the Sensedge Go doesn’t require the time- and labor-intensive installation process that wired solutions require. Instead of running cables behind the wall to physically power each device, the installation process is as simple as taking the monitor out of the box and adhering it to the wall, whether it be brick, concrete, wood, or glass. This peel-and-stick method expedites installation timelines from days or weeks down to a matter of seconds.

This is a game-changer, especially for large deployments. Unlike wired solutions that provide a reliable power supply and connection and easily integrate into your Building Management System (BMS) — which can be ideal for new builds — the wireless option of the Sensedge Go eliminates the need for specialized technicians and running new cables — which can be ideal for retrofit projects — significantly reducing costs and expediting installation timelines.

“I have set up a lot of air quality monitors in my time, and I can say that based on this test case…it was the easiest and most pain-free installation that I’ve come across.”

- Sarah Gudeman, LEED Fellow and Principal & Practice Lead at BranchPattern

2. Seamless and flexible wireless connectivity

After installation, zero configuration is needed for the Sensedge Go to connect to the gateway. As soon as the device is turned on, it will automatically connect to the closest active gateway and start collecting and transmitting data. The gateway supports both cellular and Ethernet connectivity, making it possible to operate independently of your building’s network infrastructure.

“I wish everyone who experiences the set-up process for the Sensedge Go experienced deploying different types of monitors because it really blew my mind how fast it was to set it up.”

- Shona O’Dea, Senior Associate Principal & Sustainability Director at SOM

By operating on a Sub-GHz wireless communication protocol, the Sensedge Go can transmit data up to 2 km outdoors with line of sight while penetrating an average of three to five floors and walls indoors. This ultra-long range allows you to host dozens of sensors in dozens of locations on a single gateway, which significantly cuts down the cost to deploy by reducing the number of gateways required for your project.

3. Longest battery life on the market

The Sensedge Go goes above and beyond the traditional 12-month battery life with batteries that last up to eight years. This is made possible by Adaptive Sampling™, our patent-pending technology that treats sensors as a building-wide network, instead of isolated devices. This technology intelligently analyzes sensor readings from around the building and automatically adjusts sampling intervals for each sensor in real time to best capture the entire indoor environment, while also factoring in external data like weather patterns.

Once a spike in a certain parameter is detected, the sampling interval shortens to gather more data to help identify the source. By optimizing sampling rates throughout the building, Adaptive Sampling™ can significantly extend battery life while improving accuracy and monitoring coverage at the same time.

“The way that Kaiterra has brought together all of these units to now be able to work together in a network I think is truly unique. The initial application to this to optimizing battery life I believe is just the beginning.”

- Michael Przytula, Managing Director of Intelligent & Digital Workplaces at Accenture

In addition to Adaptive Sampling™, the Sensedge Go also offers a high-frequency fixed sampling rate for projects geared towards research or building certifications. Even with more frequent sampling, the battery life lasts over four years with a sampling rate that’s three times more than other battery-powered solutions on the market.

4. Unique modular sensor design

The Sensedge Go dramatically simplifies the calibration process, saving time during annual calibrations and making it easy to upgrade sensor technology. Just like all other Kaiterra air quality monitors, the Sensedge Go has hot-swappable sensor modules for easy replacement.

Instead of removing each air quality monitor from the wall and sending it to the manufacturer to recalibrate every year, all you have to do is swap out the old sensor with the new one in one go. This is also an opportunity to upgrade your sensor to add new parameters and stay compliant with building certifications, regulations, and legislative requirements.

“Complexity and cost are clearly two huge challenges that everyone is dealing with, and those two challenges are what Sensedge Go really hits directly head-on.”

- Erik Malmstrom, CEO of SafeTraces

5. Comprehensive data for building certifications

By monitoring 14 indoor air and environmental quality parameters, the Sensedge Go provides powerful, comprehensive insights into the health and well-being of your built environment, with continuous data for particulate matter, volatile organic compounds, CO2, NO2, temperature, relative humidity, lux, light spectrum, atmospheric pressure, and occupancy by default, with optional add-ons for carbon monoxide and ozone.

“Not only can we use the Sensedge Go to comply with the features of the [WELL] air quality concept, but we can also use this as PV testing agents to replace the required on-site testing during our PV tests.”

- Alessandro Bisagni, Founder & President of BEE Incorporations

With this expanded parameter profile and RESET Grade B certification, the Sensedge Go is able to meet all of the requirements in the WELL Air Concept. Those pursuing WELL certification can use continuous monitoring with the Sensedge Go to completely replace performance testing with sensor data verification — both initially and on an ongoing basis for annual re-certifications.

Now, WELL projects can bypass the challenges, costs, and delays associated with on-site performance testing and use sensor data to simplify verification while getting richer insights about building performance.
